Stainless Steel vs. Mild Steel in Outdoor Wood Boilers

Why 409 stainless steel lasts longer than mild steel in an outdoor wood boiler.

Stainless steel HeatMaster outdoor boilers sitting in the snow

Short answer: stainless steel lasts longer. Every HeatMaster is built from 409 titanium-enhanced stainless steel.

Why 409 stainless

  • Doesn't rust like mild steel. Mild steel starts rusting from day one. Stainless has a protective layer that keeps rust out.
  • Takes more heat. 409 stainless handles up to 1,400°F. The mild steel used in boilers starts breaking down around 800°F.
  • Moves heat just as well. Stainless doesn't need to be as thick, so it transfers heat about as well as mild steel.
  • Handles wear and temperature swings. The titanium makes it tougher.
  • Doesn't warp or crack. 409 expands very little, unlike 304 stainless, which can warp and crack.

That's why more brands are switching from mild steel to stainless.
