Short answer: a well-built boiler that's taken care of can last a lifetime. It comes down to two things: how it's built and how you maintain it.
1. How it's built
- The steel: 409 stainless steel resists rust far better than mild steel. Stainless boilers usually come with about twice the warranty. See stainless vs. mild steel.
- The insulation: spray foam can trap moisture against the firebox and cause early rust.
- The design: flat, horizontal heat exchange tubes can collect moisture and wear out sooner.
2. How you take care of it
- Keep the water treated with the factory-recommended water treatment.
- Send in your free water sample once a year.
- If you shut down for summer, clean out the ashes and tubes and cover the chimney.
