Sizing an Outdoor Boiler - Choosing The Right Outdoor Furnace For You

outdoor wood furnace sizing

We are often asked how to tell what size of boiler you need for your home. This article will show you how to choose the right outdoor wood furnace for your heating needs. So without further ado, let's jump into it.

Step 1.

Add up the square footage of the ground floor of the building you want to heat.

Step 2.

Tally the square footage of your basement or upper floor and divide it by two. Add this number to the tally you got from step 1.

Step 3.

Take into account the insulation quality of your home. For example, a poorly insulated house require twice the heating capacity needed to heat a well insulated structure.

Step 4.

Determine what temperature you want to maintain throughout the winter. For example, keeping a shop at fifty degrees or at seventy degrees can significantly affect the heat load on your outdoor boiler.

Step 5.

Take the total square feet you've come up with and go outdoor furnace shopping. Below are all the outdoor wood furnaces we currently offer as well as approximately how much space they will heat. Please note that persons living in the north i.e. Wisconsin or Minnesota, will need significantly bigger boilers than someone from Virginia or Maine might use.
